South Korean singer and actor Cha Eun-woo has been notified by the National Tax Service (NTS) that he may owe more than ₩20 billion (approximately $13.6 million USD) in additional taxes following a recent audit, according to a report published January 22. The alleged tax shortfall centers on income recorded through a company established by his mother, which tax authorities say did not engage in substantive business activity. The NTS investigation conducted prior to Cha Eun-woo’s enlistment in mandatory military service focused on whether the entity, set up in his mother’s name, legitimately provided services related to his entertainment career. Authorities contend that income routed through the company, alongside earnings managed by his agency Fantagio and his personal income, effectively reduced his taxable obligations by taking advantage of lower corporate tax rates. The tax office has described the entity as a “paper company” lacking substantive operations. Source: koreaboo

Fantagio has acknowledged the audit results notice but emphasized in an official statement that the issue has not been finalized or confirmed as wrongdoing. The agency said it will pursue a proper legal review of the interpretation and application of tax law and that Cha Eun-woo and his representatives will fully cooperate with authorities.
