South Korean chef and television personality Im Seong-geun publicly addressed recent online speculation about the status of his upcoming restaurant, affirming that the project remains on track despite ongoing controversy related to his past DUI conviction.
In an interview released today, Im clarified that rumors circulating on social media suggesting his planned eatery in Paju had been cancelled are unfounded. The chef attributed the source of confusion to a banner unrelated to the restaurant property itself, dismissing claims that the opening had been called off.

“We have not cancelled the restaurant opening,” Im stated. “What is being shared online is about land next to the restaurant, not the business itself.” He emphasized that preparations for the March launch are proceeding as scheduled.
Im rose to public prominence through his dynamic appearances on Netflix’s Black & White Chefs (흑백요리사2), where his culinary expertise earned acclaim from both audiences and critics. However, his reputation came under scrutiny after he voluntarily disclosed a past DUI conviction, which led him to step back from broadcast activities. Several high-profile television appearances, including on MBC’s Omniscient Perspective (전지적 참견 시점) and JTBC’s Knowing Bros (아는 형님), were subsequently cancelled amid the backlash.
Addressing concerns about his involvement in the restaurant, Im provided context for his role: he is not the property owner but has been invited to lead as executive chef and partner, accepting a salaried role through an agreement with the building’s owner. “I was asked to be head chef because of my culinary experience, and that’s the position I am embracing,” he explained.
Im also defended his food and professional commitment, humorously noting, “The food did not commit DUI the taste remains unchanged.” His remarks sought to separate his culinary work from his personal missteps.
With the planned March opening approaching, Im’s statements aim to reassure supporters and mitigate lingering public doubt. The chef’s transparency about both his past and his ongoing professional efforts reflects a broader trend in Korean entertainment figures navigating personal accountability alongside career continuity.
