Kwon Min-ah, the 33-year-old former member of the K-pop group AOA, has opened up about a deeply personal legal victory that closes an 18-year chapter of trauma. In an emotional Instagram post on May 19, she shared the outcome of a four-year court battle, revealing that a South Korean court has formally recognized the rape charge stemming from an assault that occurred when she was a middle school student.
The incident dates back roughly 18 years. Kwon detailed the emotional rollercoaster of the trial process, noting that by the time proceedings began, 14 years had already passed. She had hoped to prove both rape and injury charges to overcome statute of limitations barriers and secure meaningful punishment. While prosecutors reportedly sought a 10-year sentence, the second trial ultimately recognized the rape but dismissed the injury component. As a result, no additional punishment can be imposed.
Despite the limitations on sentencing, Kwon expressed a sense of relief and validation. “It has been revealed that this person is a bad person,” she wrote, adding that the recognition of even one major charge holds significant meaning for her as a survivor.
