Comedian Lee Suji Mourns Father-in-Law Passing

Popular comedian and broadcaster Lee Suji is grieving the loss of her father-in-law, who passed away today, May 25.

Her agency CP Entertainment announced officially: “Lee Suji’s father-in-law passed away earlier today due to chronic illness. We kindly ask everyone to send warm comfort and condolences to Lee and all family members. We also pray for the peaceful rest of the deceased”.

According to officials, he died around 6 in the morning. The funeral wake is arranged at Room 1, Gurye Forestry Cooperative Funeral Hall in South Jeolla Province. The send-off will be held on May 27, and burial will take place at the family’s ancestral graveyard in Gurye town.

This news strikes even harder because only 17 days ago, Lee openly spoke about her father-in-law’s health in a very emotional moment. At the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards held on May 8, she received the Top Excellence Award in Entertainment Category.

Standing on stage holding the trophy, she said with tears in her eyes: “My father-in-law has been very sick lately. I really hope he sees this broadcast and smiles even just a little bit. I also love and thank my mother-in-law so much  I will work harder to make everyone laugh”. Those words touched many hearts, showing how much she cared for her husband’s parents.

Lee has always expressed great affection and respect toward her in-laws through various programs. Last year, in the content Queen of Acting Skills, she told a funny story: she once acted a scene from her famous segment Yellow Sea in front of her father-in-law, but he actually thought she was a real voice phishing scammer and got worried. She also shared, “My mother-in-law calls me ‘Princess Suji’  they treat me like their own daughter and love me dearly”.

Lee started her career in 2012 as part of KBS’ 27th batch of comedians, gaining huge love through Gag Concert. Today, she is active across platforms including SNL Korea and her personal YouTube channel “Hot Issue Ji,” showing off her wide range of characters and talents. She married a non-celebrity man three years younger than her in 2018, and they have one son together.

Friends, colleagues and fans are sending messages of sympathy, remembering how much love and warmth she always showed to her family.
