KATSEYE AMA Win Signals a New Era for K-Pop in the American Mainstream

KATSEYE took home the New Artist of the Year award at the 2026 American Music Awards, held on May 25 in Las Vegas. The win marks a significant milestone not just for the group, but for the evolving influence of K-pop strategies in the U.S. market.

Formed through a unique collaboration between HYBE and Geffen Records, KATSEYE emerged from the global audition project “The Debut: Dream Academy.” Out of 120,000 applicants, 20 trainees gathered in Los Angeles for intensive K-pop-style training.

After weeks of challenges and evaluations, the final lineup Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoonchae was selected. Their multinational backgrounds (spanning the U.S., Korea, Switzerland, the Philippines, and beyond) reflect a deliberate push toward a truly global identity.

The group’s journey was documented in the Netflix series Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE, which premiered in August 2024, just months after their official debut with the digital single “Debut.” Their first EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong), followed shortly after. What set them apart was the transparent “making-of” narrative that built genuine fan connection before they even hit the charts.

Success didn’t come overnight. In early 2026, KATSEYE made history by landing three tracks simultaneously on Billboard’s Hot 100: “Gabriela” at No. 21, “Internet Girl” at No. 29, and “Gnarly” at No. 89 a feat no previous K-pop rookie girl group had achieved. Their AMA performance of the new single “PINKY UP!” capped off an unforgettable night.

Industry analysts see this victory as validation of HYBE’s “multi-home, multi-genre” approach. With a second global girl group project already in motion including scouting in Japan KATSEYE’s award serves as powerful proof of concept. A Korean entertainment company’s training system has now produced a chart-competitive act that resonates deeply with American audiences, even with only one Korean member.

For K-pop, this isn’t just another trophy. It’s evidence that the genre’s rigorous methodology can thrive beyond its traditional borders, helping reshape what “mainstream” looks like in the world’s largest music market. As boundaries blur, KATSEYE stands as a bridge between cultures and a sign of even bigger things ahead.
