On Monday, civil society groups and activists lodged two separate impeachment complaints against Vice‑President Duterte with the House of Representatives, accusing her of misuse of public funds, betrayal of public trust, corruption and abuse of power during her tenure as vice‑president and former education secretary. The complaints allege Duterte mishandled some ₱612.5 million in confidential funds and obstructed legislative oversight  charges she and her legal team have categorically denied, calling them politically motivated. As per (Reuters Report)

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court’s ruling that barred additional impeachment proceedings within a single year cleared the way for the fresh complaints after a previous impeachment bid against her was voided on procedural grounds. As per (ABC News Report)

In a parallel development, two impeachment complaints against President Marcos  the first since he took office in 2022  were filed in January by a lawyer and activist groups. The complaints accused Marcos of corruption, constitutional violations and betrayal of public trust, including allegations tied to flood‑control project fund misuse and controversial budget insertions. However, on Feb. 4, the House justice committee overwhelmingly ruled the complaints against Marcos “insufficient in substance”, effectively stalling his impeachment effort. Supporters of the president dominate the chamber, and the decision now moves to the full House for possible further action. As per (The Star Report)

Political analysts say this dual impeachment dynamic underscores deepening rifts within the ruling elite and reflects broader public frustration over governance, corruption, and accountability issues. With both leaders once allies now locked in political rivalry, the developments mark one of the most consequential and turbulent chapters in recent Philippine political history.
