A 30-year-old man was sentenced to prison this week for breaking into the home of well-known comedian and TV personality Park Na-rae and stealing valuables worth several tens of millions of Korean won, a Seoul court ruled on Thursday.
The Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Appeals Division upheld a previous sentence of two years in prison for the defendant identified only as “A,” rejecting his appeal for leniency. Judge Jeong Seong-gyun said aggravating factors including the defendant’s criminal history and the fact that he committed the offense while on probation warranted maintaining the original sentence.
According to court documents, A unlawfully entered Park’s residence in Yongsan District on April 4 of last year and stole money and other high-value items. After the theft, he attempted to sell the stolen goods but was apprehended by police. The defendant claimed during trial that he did not know the property belonged to Park, a prominent figure in Korea’s entertainment industry.

Investigators also revealed that A was linked to another residential burglary in Yongsan in March of the same year. During his first trial, the court factored in his prior convictions, the high value of the stolen items, and the victim’s demand for strict punishment when determining his sentence.
In court documents, the defendant acknowledged his wrongdoing and pleaded for reduced punishment, saying he was remorseful and attempting to compensate the victims. Park’s legal team, however, declined any settlement, emphasizing the impact of the crime on her personal security.
The ruling highlights growing concerns about privacy risks faced by public figures and the legal repercussions for repeat offenders committing property crimes.
