The Philippines is in the midst of an unprecedented political confrontation as impeachment complaints have been filed simultaneously against both President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice‑President Sara Duterte, intensifying an already fraught political climate ahead of the 2028 elections.
On Monday, civil society groups and activists lodged two separate impeachment complaints against Vice‑President Duterte with the House of Representatives, accusing her of misuse of public funds, betrayal of public trust, corruption and abuse of power during her tenure as vice‑president and former education secretary. The complaints allege Duterte mishandled some ₱612.5 million in confidential funds and obstructed legislative oversight charges she and her legal team have categorically denied, calling them politically motivated. However, on Feb. 4, the House justice committee overwhelmingly ruled the complaints against Marcos “insufficient in substance”, effectively stalling his impeachment effort.
